Title: “The Propagation of Light Through the Ether of Emotion”
Album: “…And Down Goes The Sky” BPM: 123 Key Signature: E flat Time Signature: 4/4 Subject: The Speed of Light / Ether Theory / Despair Synopsis: In the same way that pressure waves might travel through water, or sound waves utilizes the medium of air, prior to Einstein some scientists believed that waves of light also required a substance to propagate through. They called this theoretical medium the ‘Ether’. Einstein’s theory of General Relativity ruled out the need to appeal to this ever-elusive ethereal substance. That being said, this story takes place in a universe where light DOES require the ether for the purpose of its travels. Strangely enough, the very nature of this ether isn’t contingent upon any fundamental law of physics, it’s entirely ruled by the emotions of one young girl. When this girl is happy, the ether is thin and light can travel fast and freely, but when she is in despair, the ether grows cold and thick, slowing light down and causing the world to grow increasingly dark. Despite the world’s best attempts to keep her happy, she suffers depressively – her common disposition – potentially leaving the world in a perpetually dark place. Contributors:
